This summer, the youth at FACCES have been taking the lead in the kitchen, literally! As part of our Afterschool Café program, teens are stepping into the FACCES Kitchen and learning what it truly means to live farm-to-table. Not only are they actively involved in creating nutritious meals, but they’re using those creations to provide free meals to the young people in our community aged 1–18. With guidance from our FACCES Chef and Gardener, the youth are learning how to grow what they eat and eat what they produce.

From seed to plate, it’s a beautiful thing to witness. This month alone, they’ve harvested zucchini, celery, basil, tomatoes, beets, collard greens, Swiss chard, and more. With those ingredients, they’ve made pesto, sautéed greens, roasted zucchini, homemade pasta sauce, tzatziki, fresh garden salads, and other healthy dishes.
Through this hands-on experience, our youth learn about nutrition, healthy alternatives, and how to make informed food choices. They’re also gaining independence and confidence by taking ownership of the meals they prepare, learning what flavors pair well together, and how to cook with intention. Want to experience the farm-to-table lifestyle for yourself?

Join us at our next Family Gathering on Wednesday, August 6, where you’ll have the chance to pick fresh ingredients straight from our garden and greenhouse, and enjoy a meal with your community in real time!
